The horses are disappearing from the wild! These are most likely the last photos of these particular horses.. As of the date of this listing, 878 horses have been"gathered" and removed from the Horse Management Area in southern Wyoming known as "Adobe Town". It is really sad.
When we went to try to see and photograph the horses in this area, we spent most of the day before finally finding some. It is a rather hostile environment- beautiful in its way, but desolate in others. We hiked over 1/2 mile in the cactus (not exaggerating!!) before getting close enough to take some photos with a super telephoto lens (and using an extender with it). We found this group of three stallions, a mare and a foal. I was especially fascinated with a gorgeous white (or very light gray) and a red roan.
They were living life their way, but sadly, the likelihood that they were gathered in that large number is great, and they are not there anymore. I have learned over the past month that this issue is a lot more complicated than it seems on the surface. It is a very complex issue having to do with the management of the horses, and lawsuits regarding their removal from areas where they have been for so long. Wild horses are part of our history, and our cultural legacy. The imagery attached to a vision of wild horses running across the west keeps horse lovers fascinated, and emotions run high. How can they not? ! I captured the photo to save the moment and its view to share with you, because it is most likely gone from this place forever.
