To me, nothing is a symbol of the old western landscape more than the buffalo, (or more correctly, bison). In Yellowstone, they are allowed to live in the large herds similar to what we would have seen more than a hundred years ago. They have made the news a lot lately due to people being stupid and getting too close, but they are WILD, and BIG, and agile.
On our first day in Yellowstone, we drove into the Lamar Valley in the evening, and a herd was in the entrance to the valley. Many were laying and chewing their cud, and the “red dogs” ( babies) were playing. One lone bull ambled over the crest of a hill, and since it was the “golden hour”, and the sky was still blue but the light was low, and it bathed him and the landscape in a gold glow. His rough shaggy coat took on a burnished red color. I was using a good zoom lens from the vehicle, so it looks like I was much closer than I was. His head was massive, and the light hit his face and horns and when I zoomed in, I could see sage brush particles in his coat. It was cool to get that “close” without actually being that close, and I have "captured him" to save the moment and its view to share with you.
